Strikes Against the FNM Government

Published: Wednesday August 1st, 2007

Strike 1 They have promised the people that they have the answers to crime, but after almost 3 months in office no plans have been revealed. The Min. of Immigration and National Security, the Hon. Tommy Turnquest, addressed the house stating that something will be done in September, a whole 4 months after taking office! The murder count is now 49, it is increasing rapidly, and who knows how many lives could be lost by September! Prevention is better than cure!

Strike 2 Carifesta has been postponed to be held in the Bahamas from 2008 to 2012. This decision was made solely by Prime Minister Ingraham without consulting with the cultural giants of the nation who would have played a major role in the planning and execution of this popular cultural event of the Caribbean. An event as such could have definitely boosted our tourist economy and the awareness of the Bahamas to the delegates in attendance.

Strike 3 Within 30% of completion, the contract for the school in Salina Point, Acklins came to a screeching halt, all because it was a PLP project.

Strike 4 The FNM government have been constantly cancelling projects and contracts signed under the former PLP administration, and then they turn around and complain about the state of the Bahamas, when clearly they are not making a difference nor bringing about a change! Examples of such are the Bay Street Redevelopment Project and the Straw Market Contract. Are the excuses deterrence for Bahamians to see that they do not know how to run the country?

Strike 5 Family Island Anchor Projects are now viewed by this government as “unnecessary” and have been placed on the drawing board to be discontinued.

Strike 6 They are continuously showing their indecisive and confused nature by cancelling projects and programmes, especially those started by the PLP, and re-initiating them. Furthermore, they are even more indecisive when it comes to their own projects signed under their administration, in particular the Bimini Bay Project. Now they are saying that they should have “never approved it” (in 2002). But yet they’ve come to “restore trust!”

Strike 7 The cancelling of the Ministry of Tourism’s Junkanoo Summer Festival while it is in session. This places the Bahamas in a state of humiliation as tourists and even Bahamians strategically plan to attend the festival events as they can. Thus the cancelling of the festival before its last week reveals a government who: (1) has no respect for Bahamians, (2) no respect for tourists, and (3) no respect for vendors and entertainers. A word to the wise: It is better to not start something than to start it and know that you cannot finish!

Strike 8 When Prime Minister Ingraham indicated earlier in the budget debate that he would be “saving the country money,” that statement left some wondering how he would do so. As we’ve come to realize that a leopard never changes its spots, victimization emerged and is a top priority of this government where now after over “100 Bahamian jobs” later, it appears that it is through such a devious act the FNM will produce a “balanced budget” based on “twisted economics.”

Strike 9 After almost 3 months there is still a vacant seat in the Upper House, which belongs to Her Majesty’s Opposition. This is not a sign of diplomacy and the FNM has not proven to be a diplomatic government as they started off their term in the “spirit of error” and by breaking “Parliamentary Tradition” by not filling the seats of the Senate before the opening of Parliament.

For those of you who are knowledgeable about the game of softball or baseball, in an inning a total of 3 strikes counted on a player while batting equals 1 out, hence a total of 3 outs ends the inning. Now if we were to apply the same principle to that of our government, they have already accumulated 9 strikes which is equivalent to 3 outs, and we’re sure that this cycle will continue if they stay at the rate they are going
